Twenty-four members and guests turned out to hear Wilford Kale discuss his writing career and historical research for his books. Kale began as a sports writer for the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer in 1960 and later moved to the State News Bureau of the Richmond Times-Dispatch in Williamsburg (1967). He continued writing for that paper part time while serving a two-year stint in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge in 1971, Kale returned to Times-Dispatch full time, retring in 1993 as Bureau Chief for Eastern Virginia.

Kale has written, co-authored or edited seven books. The first was Hark Upon the Gale--An Illustrated History of the College of William and Mary, published in 1985 and reprinted in 1990. In 2007/08 an entirely new edition came out, updated and completely redesigned. The foreword was written by Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of Great Britain and former W&M Chancellor.

Kale also produced three other books about W&M, including Goal to Goal--100 Seasons of Football at William and Mary, which he co-authored. It was published in 1997. More recently, he completed two books for the Dietz Press in Richmond/Petersburg, compiling and editing historical articles by Parke Rouse Jr. (who died in 1997) about the English Settlement of 1607 at Jamestown. That book is entitled Jamestown's Story: Act One of the American Dream.

The second of Kale's Dietz Press books is titled Hampton in the Bygone Days -- 400 years on the Virginia Peninsula, which contains about 50 historical vignettes on various aspects of Hampton's history from 1610 until the late 20th century.  Kale compiled the book from a variety of sources. Included were Kale's updates of Rouse's stories and seven new ones he authored to broaden the historical overview.

Kale's current writing project comes out of his master's degree thesis at the University of Leicester in Leicester, England. The working title is "The Student is Converted into the Warrior: The College of William and Mary and its association with the military."  He has spent the past three years researching the story.

Signed copies of his books were available at the meeting.
