I believe in the power of our lifestories, yours and mine. They
form our backdrop, the tapestry, surrounded by and within which
we live our lives, from birth through old age. That fabric
folds, undulates, reveals, hides, and weaves around us and
through us at all times. We can be more or less conscious of it
as individuals.
Conscious or not, as children we ask for stories, and as adults
continue to seek them out.
We talk in stories in the anecdotes and jokes that we tell.
These tell our individual story and our common story as human
beings. When we’re done with those for the day, we pick up a
book, go to a play, see a movie, or turn on the television. Do
we do this for entertainment value alone or for other reasons?
What is there to learn from those who came before us? From those
who live in the same household or community with us? About
ourselves?
What gives us the knowledge, wisdom, and confidence to shape our
lives and the world around us today?
Can we find the answers to some of life’s questions through
writing our own or reading others’ stories?
